You own one to five ash trees, someone said “inject it or it'll die,” and you want the five-year math before you commit to anything. Here it is, using the rates we actually charge.

The 30% rule decides everything
Emamectin benzoate injection works because the tree carries it through living sapwood into the crown. An ash that has lost less than about 30% of its canopy still has the plumbing and the reserves to do that, and to rebuild. Past 30%, the product can't reach enough of the tree and the tree can't recover — you'd be injecting a tree that's already leaving.
There's a second reason the line matters, and it's the expensive one. Dead ash dries and goes brittle within a couple of seasons. Once it's too dangerous for a climber to work in, the whole removal has to be done from a lift or a crane — roughly double the price of the same tree taken down while it could still be climbed. Waiting doesn't just cost you the tree; it costs you the cheaper removal.
So the decision is two questions: how much canopy is gone, and if the answer is “a lot,” how fast can it come down.
Signs it's too late to treat
- Top third of the crown bare in full leaf, with the thinning working downward
- Heavy sprouting (epicormic shoots) along the trunk and main limbs — the tree replacing what it's losing
- Woodpecker flecking: lighter, roughened bark where birds have dug for larvae
- D-shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across
- Bark splitting over S-shaped larval galleries

And a 3-inch-caliper replacement takes 15 to 20 years to provide comparable shade. If the ash is already dead and brittle, add a crane and double the removal line.
The honest summary: for a healthy ash, treatment costs roughly a third of removal over ten years and you keep the tree. For an ash past the 30% line, treatment is money spent on a tree that's leaving, and the cheapest removal is the one done this season. Dane County notes
Three things that change the answer depending on where the ash stands.
Madison terrace ash
Ash in the strip between sidewalk and street belongs to the City, and Madison's Urban Forestry department treats or removes it on its own schedule. You don't treat a terrace ash, and you don't pay to remove one. Ash on your side of the sidewalk is yours.
HOA replacement rules
Newer subdivisions in Sun Prairie, Verona, Fitchburg, and Middleton Hills often require approval before a removal and a replacement tree afterward — which changes the remove-and-replace column above. We check covenants during the assessment.
MGE clearance
An ash grown into MGE service lines needs line clearance before it can come down. It adds lead time to a removal, not cost. For a treatment it's irrelevant — one more reason to inject a healthy tree before it becomes a removal.

How much does emerald ash borer treatment cost in Madison and Dane County?
Emamectin benzoate trunk injection costs about $8 to $15 per inch of trunk diameter, measured at 4.5 feet, and protects the tree for 2 to 3 years per application. For a 20-inch ash that's roughly $160 to $300 per cycle, or $800 to $1,000 over ten years. A 24-inch ash runs about $190 to $360 per cycle. Is it cheaper to treat an ash tree or remove it?
For a healthy ash, treating is cheaper by a wide margin. Ten years of injections on a 24-inch tree costs around $800 to $1,400; removing the same tree costs $1,500 to $3,000 or more, plus $150 to $500 for the stump and $300 to $800 for a replacement tree that won't provide comparable shade for 15 to 20 years. Removal wins the math only when the tree is already past saving — more than about 30% canopy loss — because then you're paying to inject a tree that's leaving anyway.
What is the 30% rule?
Treatment works best when an ash has lost less than about 30% of its canopy. Below that line the tree still has enough healthy sapwood to move the product through the crown and enough reserves to recover. Above it, injections rarely bring the tree back, and every season it stands dead it gets more brittle and more expensive to remove — eventually a crane job instead of a climb.
How often does an ash need to be treated?
Every 2 to 3 years while emerald ash borer is active, which in Dane County means indefinitely — EAB isn't going away. Most of our Madison-area ash are on a two-year cycle. Skipping a cycle on a tree that's already been attacked is how you lose a tree you've paid to protect.
How do I know if it's too late to treat?
Look at the crown in full leaf.
