Oak Wilt Treatment in Madison & Dane County

Financing available — low monthly payments

Treat — when injection is the right call

  • Healthy white or bur oak within about 50–100 ft of a confirmed or strongly suspected infection
  • Healthy red oak on the far side of a planned plow line — prevention buys time while red oaks still look fine
  • White or bur oak with early, branch-by-branch decline and most of the crown still intact
  • A trunk injection of propiconazole (Alamo and equivalents), taken up in the growing season and repeated about every two years while the pocket is active
  • Priced by trunk diameter; for a mature yard oak, a few hundred dollars per treatment (same planning number as our statewide guide)

Remove — when treatment wastes money

  • Red, black, or pin oak with active canopy wilt — they can die in weeks, and fungicide after symptoms rarely works
  • Any oak already leafless: the stem can still feed beetles next spring
  • White or bur oak that has already lost more than about a third of the crown
  • Always plan the root-graft barrier first when same-species neighbors are within about 50–100 ft — cutting a live wilted oak before the plow can push the fungus into the next tree
  • Wood handling is part of the job: chip, haul, debark, burn, or tarp and seal through the next summer

The full decision matrix lives on the statewide treat-or-remove guide — this page is the Madison / Dane treatment path.

Wisconsin timing — DNR / UW Extension language

We follow the same windows the Wisconsin DNR and UW Extension publish for oak wilt. We do not invent a shorter or longer Madison-only season.

High-risk: ~April 1 – July 15

Sap beetles are most active. Fresh pruning cuts attract them. Do not prune oaks in this window unless a storm has already opened a wound — then remove the hazard and paint the cut immediately.

Our Dane County default: Nov – March

In active infection areas (Pheasant Branch, oak-heavy west-side and village blocks) we hold oaks to the dormant window entirely. Terrace oaks in Madison can add City Forestry rules on top of the DNR window.

Injection: growing season

Propiconazole has to move in the sapwood. Treatment is applied by a licensed applicator when the tree can take the product up — not in mid-winter dormancy.

What treatment and removal cost (planning numbers only)

The Tree Wise Men team did a great job, grinding the stump, cleaning up the debris, and spreading grass seed with straw to get the new growth going. Great working with them!

Oak Wilt Treatment FAQs

Diagnosis on site by an ISA Certified Arborist; this page is a guide, not a lab result.

When does oak wilt treatment make sense in Madison?

Treatment — a preventive propiconazole trunk injection — makes sense for healthy white or bur oaks, and sometimes healthy red oaks, that sit within about 50 to 100 feet of an infected tree. Red, black, and pin oaks that already show canopy wilt almost never recover; removal after a root-graft barrier is the honest path. The statewide treat-or-remove guide walks through the full matrix.

What does oak wilt treatment cost in Dane County?

Preventive propiconazole trunk injection is priced by trunk diameter and typically repeated every two years while the threat persists; for a mature yard oak that's a few hundred dollars per treatment. A vibratory-plow root-graft barrier is quoted per site. Those planning numbers come from our Southern Wisconsin oak wilt guide — we do not invent a Madison-only price list. Removal of a large upland oak runs $1,400–$2,800; crane work over a house $5,000–$8,000+.

When can oaks be pruned in Madison and Dane County?

Not from April through July at minimum. The DNR's high-risk period for Southern Wisconsin runs roughly April 1 to July 15, when sap beetles are most active and fresh cuts attract them. In active infection areas — Pheasant Branch in Middleton, oak-heavy west-side blocks, Maple Bluff — we hold oaks to the November-through-March dormant window entirely. Terrace oaks in Madison can fall under City Forestry rules on top of that. The one exception is a storm-broken limb: remove the hazard immediately and paint the wound.

Can a red oak with wilt symptoms be injected?

Rarely worth it once the canopy is wilting. Red oaks can go from green to bare in four to six weeks, and fungicide after symptoms appear rarely works. Map the root grafts, plow if neighbors are at risk, then remove the infected stem and handle the wood so it cannot produce spore mats next spring.

The oak next door in Middleton (or Verona) is dying. What can I do?

Root grafts ignore fences. Same-species oaks within 50 to 100 feet may already be connected. A plow line can usually be run on your side of the line, and your healthy oaks can be injected now. Start with an assessment rather than a dispute — most neighbors are relieved to have a pocket plan.

How do I book an oak wilt assessment in Madison?

Call the Landmark Pl office at (608) 716-4167 or book online. An ISA Certified Arborist walks the property, tells you whether it is wilt or a lookalike (two-lined chestnut borer, drought, construction roots), and quotes treatment, barrier, or removal from the same visit. After-hours emergencies: (608) 751-4171.
