When cabling is the right call
- Co-dominant stems — two trunks of similar size from one point — especially with included bark trapped in the union
- A heavy, extended limb over a roof, driveway, or patio on an otherwise sound tree
- Historic or specimen trees where the value of the tree justifies keeping it standing
- A post-storm partial split with sound wood on both sides, caught early
- Multi-stem birches, maples, and lindens that lean apart under load
- Any of the above on a tree that is healthy, vigorous, and free of decay at the union
When removal is the kinder answer
- Advanced decay at the union — a cable holds the limbs to each other, not to rotten wood
- Root-plate failure or a new lean: the problem is below the cable, not above it
- The target is extreme (bedroom roof, play area, power service) and the residual risk stays high even with support
- The tree is already in decline — thin crown, dieback, cankers — and you'd be cabling a tree that's leaving anyway
- A split that has opened far enough that the stems no longer share load

Size and height of the install points

Dynamic synthetic systems allow the tree to move naturally, which lets it keep building its own strength; they're the default for healthy trees with a structural weakness. Steel is rigid and stronger per cable; it's chosen when the union is already compromised or the loads are very high. Our arborist recommends one based on the tree, and the price difference is usually small compared to the labor.
Can you cable a tree that has already started to split?
Sometimes. A fresh split with sound wood on both sides can often be braced with rods and cabled above — especially after a storm, when the alternative is losing a tree that was healthy a week ago.
