Watch a Grapple Saw Totem Cut— Hazardous Tree, Time-Lapse

This is what hazardous tree removal looks like when the tree is too compromised to climb. Our grapple-saw rig reduces the trunk top-down with the operator in the cab and no ground crew under load. For Beloit-area properties — riverbank trees along the Rock River corridor with rotted root systems, storm-damaged trees in the Beloit College neighborhoods, or aging silver maples in postwar subdivisions where climbing isn't the answer — this is the equipment that matches the failure mode. Dispatched from our Janesville HQ 15 minutes north.

Grapple Saw Totem Cut — Hazardous Tree Removal Time-Lapse
Read transcript

This is a time-lapse demonstration of a grapple-saw totem cut on a hazardous tree in Southern Wisconsin. The technique is named for what's left at each stage of the work: a free-standing trunk section — the "totem" — that's progressively reduced from the top down until only the ground-level cut remains.

The grapple saw is a hydraulic boom-mounted attachment that combines a hydraulic chain saw with a clamping grapple. The operator runs the entire cut from the truck cab — positioning the boom, clamping the wood, making the cut, lifting the section clear, and placing it on the ground or the chip truck. No climber goes into the tree. No ground crew passes under a suspended load during cutting. The whole work envelope is engineered to keep humans out of the failure zone.

This technique exists because some trees can't be climbed safely. A trunk with advanced internal decay, a storm-damaged tree with a partial failure, a tree compromised by a root system failing under saturated soil, a hazard tree leaning over a target with no safe felling direction — these are the conditions where climbing rigging introduces unacceptable risk to the crew. The grapple saw moves the human out of the failure zone entirely. It's not the faster tool for every job; it's the right tool when the tree itself is the hazard.

In this time-lapse, you'll see the trunk being reduced section by section. Each cut is sized to keep the lifted piece inside the grapple saw's rated capacity at the working radius. The operator places each section in the designated landing zone — chipper-ready brush separated from logs, log sections stacked for hauling, no piece dropped or thrown. The methodical pace is what makes the work safe; the time-lapse compresses what is actually careful, sequenced execution.

Tree Wise Men LLC operates grapple-saw equipment from our Janesville, Wisconsin headquarters. ISA Certified Arborists, TCIA Accredited operation, full insurance for hazardous tree work and storm response across Rock and Dane counties.

Tree Removal Across Beloit's Neighborhoods

Beloit is a WI/IL border community with a rich industrial history and diverse neighborhoods. From the revitalized downtown along the Rock River to established residential areas near Beloit College, each area presents distinct tree removal challenges that our local crew handles daily.

Beloit College Area

The neighborhoods surrounding Beloit College feature century-old homes with mature oaks, elms, and maples growing close to historic structures. Tight lot lines, narrow driveways, and the proximity of neighboring homes require precision rigging and careful section removal to protect property.

Downtown & River Corridor

Beloit's downtown revitalization along the Rock River has increased demand for commercial tree management. Riverside Drive, Broad Street, and State Street properties need trees removed or managed around commercial buildings, parking areas, and pedestrian zones without disrupting business operations.

Ironworks District Properties

The redeveloped Ironworks campus and surrounding commercial properties require professional tree management for site aesthetics, safety, and new construction clearance. We handle commercial removals with proper traffic management, coordination with property managers, and minimal disruption to tenants and visitors.

Older Residential Neighborhoods

Beloit's established neighborhoods west of the river and along Riverside Drive have dense mature canopy that provides shade and character but also creates risk when trees decline. Ash trees devastated by emerald ash borer, dying oaks, and silver maples with structural defects are common removal needs.

Rock River Waterfront Trees

The Rock River flows through the heart of Beloit, and waterfront properties face unique challenges. Periodic flooding weakens root systems, riverbank erosion undermines tree stability, and leaning trees over the water require directional felling or crane removal to prevent them from entering the waterway.

WI/IL Border Properties

Beloit straddles the Wisconsin-Illinois border, and we serve properties on both sides. Whether your tree is on Beloit's west side or in South Beloit, we handle permitting differences and utility coordination for both municipalities. One call covers your property regardless of which side of the state line it sits on.
